Is it coming back or it has never been gone? The bullet journal, or bujo system for short, was created by Ryder Carroll and was made available to the public in 2013 after several decades of research. But what is bullet journaling about?
…it is about YOU
Of course, a real and good bullet journal reflects you, your needs, and your life circumstances. It does all this by giving you a framework that not only makes you more productive but also allows you to have some me time. Sounds good, doesn’t it?
Back to the basics!
You don’t need much for your bullet journal: an empty notebook and a pen. Dotted is a very common and widely used type of notebook, but if you only have blank, lined or checkered notebooks at home, you can start with that too.
If you’re a beginner, it’s worth creating a few basic pages (spreads in Bujo’s technical language).
Index
- Yearly planner
- Monthly planner
- Weekly planner
- Daily list
The index helps you find the topics and pages in your notebook, so it is worth numbering the pages and referring them back to the Index (table of context). Write down the events and tasks for the given period on the planner pages, and make room for future notes as well.
Once the management of the above is part of your everyday life, and your system is set up, you can start customizing your notebook. This means that you can create pages in it that better suit your own needs. Do you love series, do you adore books? Create a monthly or yearly list of books and series you’ve read and watched. Are you putting together a budget for something? Prepare a page for the budget, in which you can mark how much you managed to set aside month by month. The essence of the system is that this “booklet” is about you. It should contain pages that are important to you. Thanks to this uniqueness, no two bujos are the same in the world.

Extra BUJO ideas
On social media platforms, one stumbles upon more and more beautiful things that can provide great inspiration once the basics and routine have been established. Some people give each month its own theme and carry that theme through each of their weekly and daily planners. There are those who create their entire bullet journal in one style. You can use the colors of the Zebra Mildliner Brush&Marker, which are already available in 25 colors for each theme.

The important thing is that you don’t get upset if you don’t have drawing talent or dexterity – you’re not making the journal for someone else, but for yourself! Don’t compare yourself to people who have been bullet journaling for years and whose main hobby is drawing anyway. Let it go, you don’t have to conform to them. You focus on your own goals and your own system. You don’t have an hour every day to spend on your notebook? There’s no problem – then design your bujo in a minimal design. The Zebra Technical Drawing Pen can be a great friend in this.
